History & geography
Kraków, with the population of 806 201 people (2023), is the second-largest (right after Warsaw - the capital of Poland) and one of the oldest cities in Poland. It gained city rights in 1257 and was the capital of Poland until 1596. During the II World War, Kraków became the capital of Germany's General Government. Fortunately, the city was not destroyed during the war. The Old Town of Kraków with Wawel Royal Castle was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 and was one of the first sites granted this status in the world.
The city is situated on the Vistula River in Lesser Poland (Małopolska) Voivodeship. The Vistula is the longest river in Poland (1047 km); rises at Barania Góra and empties into the Baltic Sea. It flows through Poland's largest cities: Kraków, Sandomierz, Warsaw, Płock, Włocławek, Toruń, Bydgoszcz, Grudziądz, Gdańsk and more.
