Best places & attractions

Kraków and the surrounding Małopolska region offer a wealth of fascinating sights (many of which you can see admission free on certain week days). Some of the most interesting and important places are (see attached links):

  • Wawel Castle: A stunning example of Renaissance architecture, this historic castle located on the Wawel Hill overlooks the Vistula River and is a must-visit for its royal history and beautiful grounds. Find out more about tickets and available exhibitions here.
  • Main Market Square (Rynek Główny): The largest medieval town square in Europe, it features the impressive St. Mary's Basilica and the Cloth Hall, busting with life, shops, and cafes. While admiring the main square, you can also visit The Jan Matejko House - a museum created in the home of one of the biggest Polish painters (visits are admission free on Tuesdays).
  • Kazimierz: This historic Jewish district is rich in culture and history, home to synagogues, galleries and vibrant nightlife.
  • Ojcowski National Park: A short drive from Kraków, this picturesque park boasts limestone cliffs, lush forests, and fascinating caves, including the famous Łokietek Cave.
  • Auschwitz-Birkenau: A powerful and somber memorial and museum that serves as a reminder of the Holocaust, offering guided tours to educate visitors about its tragic history.
  • Wieliczka Salt Mine: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this incredible underground mine features chapels, sculptures, and lakes carved from salt.
  • Tatra Mountains: Just south of Kraków, these breathtaking mountains offer hiking, skiing, and stunning landscapes, particularly around Zakopane.
  • Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków (MOCAK): This museum features a diverse collection of contemporary art and regularly hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events (on Thursdays entry to exhibitions at level -1 is free and tickets for temporary exhibitions are discounted).
  • Aquapark Kraków: A popular indoor water park that offers numerous slides, pools, and wellness facilities. It's a great spot for relaxation and fun.
  • Energylandia: Located in Zator, this amusement park is one of the largest in Poland, featuring a variety or rollercoasters, water rides, and family-friendly attractions. It's perfect for thrill-seekers and families alike.
